Main Event – Joe Neal vs. Jose Perez (featherweight championship)

Rocktagon states Neal will be defending his Rocktagon featherweight championship belt.  The 25 year-old Neal is 4 – 0. He won his last fight by KO in the 1st round, and the remaining fights by decision.  He comes from Hayward and lists his fight team as Crispim BJJ. The 5′ 7″ and 27 year-old Perez is 2 – 1 – 1, his 2 wins were by unanimous decisions and his loss was by submission.  He received a draw for his last fight  He fights out of Gilroy and lists his fight team as Antdawg’s USH.

Round 1 – Some ranging strikes.  Perez throws a left hook but Neal counters with a straight right. Neal lands a solid punch and knocks Perez down.  Neal follows to the mat but Perez is out and the ref stops the fight!

Result:  Neal by KO at 1:21  in the 1st round.

Co-main Event – Randall Wallace vs. Victor Bryson (light heavyweight championship)

Rocktagon states this fight is for their light heavyweight belt, although Camo lists this as a welterweight fight.  The 5′ 11″  and 22 year-old Wallace is 2 – 1, with 1 win by submission in the 2nd round and 1 by KO in the 1st round.  The loss was by unanimous decision at the Slugfest promotion in Oakland on 10/22/11 (click to see our photos of this event).  Wallace is out of Oakdale and lists his team as (Oakdale MMA) Last Stand Fight Team.  The 5′ 9″ and 23 year-old Bryson has not fought in a Camo event.  According to Rocktagon, Bryson is a Marine veteran with military combatives experience and is a two-time Greco-Roman wrestling champion (they don’t say  what championship).  Bryson is from Santa Maria and lists his association as SMAC (Does anyone know whether this refers to a gym or to a Marine Corps assignment, as in “Specialist in Martial Arts Conditioning?”).

Round 1 –  Bryson lands some heavy combos, chasing Wallace across the cage.  Wallace grabs underhooks and takes him down, takes his back, flattens him out and throws left fists at the side of  Bryson’s head.   Wallace has Bryson’s arm trapped with his leg, throws some hard hooks to the side of Bryson’s head.  Bryson isn’t able to protect his head.  The ref stops the fight.

Result:  Wallace by TKO at 0:43 of the 1st round.

JJ Okanovich (0 – 1 ) fought at Born to Fight (see our photos here) vs. Israel Delgado (0 – 0) – welterweight fight.

Round 1 – Delgado grabs a Muay Thai clinch and throws him to the ground.  He stands up and grabs Okanovich’s foot landing some hard kicks to the thighs.  Okanovich stands up and shoots on Delgado, grabbing a double-leg.  Okanovich ends up in Delgado’s full guard and Delgado gets a leg triangle but loses it.  The round ends up with Delgado on top.

Round 2 – Delgado lands a straight right and another straight right knocking Okanovich to the mat.  Okanovich grabs double-legs and takes Delgado down inpo full guard.  Delgado reaches for a leg triangle but misses.  Okanovich moves into side control against the fence and tries to mount his back, slips, then gets back mount.  Then Delgado rolls and Okanovich takes bull mount.  Okanovich switches to and armbar.  Delgado taps with seconds to go in the round.

Result:  Delgado by armbar at 1:58 in the 3rd round.

Jose Martin Villanueva (0 – 1) vs. Curtis Palmer (0 – 0)

Round 1 – Palmer lands a good combo and kick.  Martin responds by knocking him down.  Palmer scrambles but Martin takes him down.  Martin stands up and lands some heavy right hooks, knocks him down and the ref stops the fight.

Result:  Martin by TKO at 0:44 in the 1st round.

Cynthia Calvillo (0 – 0) vs. Stefanie Harrison (0 – 0).

Round 1 – They start fast with Calvillo taking Harrison down into half guard then transitioning into full mount.  She’s landing a lot of heavy blows.  Harrison is having trouble blocking the blows.  Some hammer fists some straight rights and lefts.  Harrison gives up her back.  Calvillo flattens her out,  Harrison rolls again as Calvillo lands huge combos.

Round 2 – They mix up fists.  Calvillo tries for a single leg.  Misses.  Harrison is looking gassed.  Calvillo is looking a little tired too.  They both throw wild punches but Calvillo looks like she’s a more accurate and crisper striker.

Round 3 – Harrison is moving okay but she’s throwing weak punch.  Calvillo lands a good right to her chin and swarms on her.  She’s out on her feet as Calvillo chases her across the ring landing strike upon strike.  The ref stops the fight.

Result:  Calvillo by KO  at 1:16 in the 3rd round.

Isaiah Batin-Gonzalez (0 – 1) vs. Shawn McMullin (0 – 0) featherweight fight.

Round 1 – McMullin lands a left jab.  Gonzalez lands a nice high right kick.  Then lands a left kick but McMullin shoots and takes him down.  Gonzalez mounts but McMullin regains half guard then sweeps and grabs a guillotine but can’t hold on.  They stand and McMullin shoots taking Gonzalez down.  Gonzalez scrambles up but McMullin grabs a leg and tosses him down.  They stand up and Gonzalez lands some good knees.

Round 2 – McMullin  attempts to shoot but Gonzalez stuffs it they clinch and Gonzalez lands a bunch of hard knees.  McMullin does a hip toss and takes Gonzalez down into half guard and grabs a guillotine.  He has it in pretty tight.  Gonzalez rolls him over and it looks like McMullin is going to loose it.  Gonzalez struggles into half guard.  Gonzalez escapes and takes McMullin’s back and the round ends.

Round 3 – Gonzalez lands some good combinations and McMullin looks hurt.  He tries to shoot but Gonzalez lands some heavy strikes as they go to the ground.  The ref stops it.

Result:  Gonzalez by TKO at 0:26 in the 3rd round.

Mefi Monterroso (0 – 1) vs. Michael Gall (1 – 3) – flyweight fight.

Round 1 – Nothing much happening.  A few glancing blows by both.  Monterroso shoots for a double leg and pushes Gall against the fence.  They swap postions several times.  Gall tries a trip but Monterroso ends up on top in side control.  Monterroso takes full mount but Gall escapes out the back.  Monterroso  tries to kick but Gall counters with a solid right that sets Monterroso back on his heels.  The round ends.

Round 2 – Starts the same as Round 1.  Monterroso tries some round house combos band Gall counters with a left jab.  More circling.  Gall attempts to shoot and Monterroso grabs a standing guillotine.  He takes him down into his guard but loses the guillotine.  The round ends with Gall in Monterroso’s guard.

Round 3 – Starts fast.  Monterroso takes Gall down into side control.  Gall gains half guard then full guard.  Gall has Monterroso locked down so he’s not doing much from the top.  Monterroso’s having trouble getting an arm loose to strike.  Monterroso stacks Gall up against the fence and the round ends before he can do anything.

Result:  Monterroso by unanimous decision.  No scores announced.

Gustavo Farias (0 – 0) vs. Ahmed Abdelaziz (0 – 1)  -  lightweight fight.

Round 1 – Mostly ranging strikes initially.  Abdelaziz lands a solid right and Farias is knocked down or trips.  Abdelaziz pounces and lands some heavy strikes from side control.  Abdelaziz transitions to back control and locks in an RNC.

Result:  Abdelaziz by RNC at 0:53 of the 1st round.

Jaime Rios (1 – 0) vs. Jeremy Murphy (2 – 0) – featherweight fight.

Round 1 – Rios lands a left fist right away and takes Murphy down.  Rios lands shots to the ribs from the top, postures up.  Rios grabs a double leg and takes him down.  Murphy gets a guillotine but Rios escapes.  They’re on their feet exchanging punches.  Rios takes blue down into full guard.  Murphy reaches for an armbar and Murphy backs out.  They swing and the round ends.

Round 2 – Rios takes Murphy down into side control.  Murphy gains half guard.  Both are landing shots to the ribs.  Rios isn’t doing much.  Murphy has under hooks.  Rios postures up and lands a couple shots from the top.  Rios is more successful now, landing more shots from the top.  The round ends.

Round 3 – They’re sparring and Rios seems to have better range but nothing hard landed.  Rios has Murphy backing up continuously.  A few kicks and spinning back fists attempted but nothing lands.  It appears Rios is out boxing Summers .

Result:  Unanimous decision for Rios. Couldn’t hear the scores.

Justin Davis (0 – 2) vs. Brian Summers (0 – 1) – middleweight fight.

Round 1 – Davis shoots right away and takes him down into full guard to land fists but Summers scrambles to his feet.  Davis takes Summers down and lands some ground and pound.  Summers tries to stand up but Davis transitions to his back.  Davis turns into full guard, then sweeps into Summers’ full guard.  End of round.

Round 2 – Davis starts with an attempted spinning back kick but Summers blocks and they grapple.  Summers grabs  guillotine and drops to the ground but Davis  gets out.  Davis lands a glancing right.  They both land outide kicks.  Some swinging and Davis gets a solid left.  Summers grabs a double leg and appears hurt.  Davis rushes and takes Summers down. The round ends but blue looks like he wants to throw in the towel.

Result:  Davis by failure of opponent to answer the bell.

Michael Ortega (4-0)  vs. Timothy Peterson (1 – 0) – cruiserweight fight.

Round 1 – Peterson shoots and after some up and down he eventually takes Ortega down.  But Ortega gets a few short rights in the process.  Ortega is able to stand up and they start swinging.  Peterson lands a hard right to Ortega’s chin and he goes down.  The ref stops the fight.

Result:  Peterson by TKO at 1:55 in the first round.

We were at the Chicken Ranch Bingo and Casino in James Town, CA yesterday to cover Bound by Honor, put on by Art of War Productions.  My apologies to anyone who tuned in last night to catch the round-by-round action.  I had no cell signal way up there in the hills by James Town, and was unable to post anything during the fight.  I took notes and I’m post as summaries of the action now, as I decipher my notes. AMATEUR CARD (All amateur fights are 3 rounds x 2 min):

Mike Nakagawa vs. Lawrence Ayman (130 lbs.)

Round 1 – The round starts out with and exchange of leg kicks. Nakagawa catches Ayman off balance and slips a hard right cross inside Ayman’s guard, followed by a left hook.  After they separate, Ayman throws several combos which Nakagawa easily slips.  Nakagawa ducks a punch and shoots for a double leg, pushing him up against the fence.  Ayman uses underhooks to try to stand him up, but Nakagawa has the double leg locked in.  Nakagawa lifts him,gets great elevation and slams Ayman to the mat and into side control.   The round ends in this position.

Round 2 –  Ayman lands a solid right leg kick, Nakagawa tries to check but misses.  A few fists exchanged without anything landing.  Then Nakagawa lands a hard strike – the post blocks my view, but Ayman goes down and his whole body is limp.  Nakagawa drops a hammer fist before the ref pulls him off.

Result:  Nakagawa by KO in the 2nd round.

Luis Jauragui vs. Miguel Andres Quiroz (155 lbs.)

Round 1 – Jauagui immediately shoots but Quiroz clinches with an over/under.  But Jauagui has him off balance and manages to take him down, and into half guard.  Jauagui moves him up against the fence, postures up and drops fists, left and right.  Quiroz isn’t able to block most of the shots, and the round ends with Jauagui in control.

Round 2 – They start circling and sparring with nothing solid landing.  Then Jauagui shoots for a single leg but misses and they clinch with Quiroz’ back against teh fence.  It looks like Quiroz tries to reverse but Jaragui gets him off balance, grabs a body lock and takes him down into half guard.  Quiroz gains full guard.  Jaragui fights for separation but Quiroz keeps him locked up with overhooks for a while until  Jaragui gets separation and stacks him.  Jaragui does some ground pounding for most of the remainder of the round, while Quiroz is unable to lock him down until the last seconds of the round.

Round 3 – Jaragui immediately shoots and gets a body lock, taking him down and into full mount.  Jaragui gets a high mount and pounds both sides of Quiroz’ head.  Quiroz tries to roll and ends up giving up his back with Jaragui on top.  Jaragui flattens him out and is trying for an RNC but Quiroz has good wrist control.  The remainder of the round involves Quiroz trying to rotate and Jargui staying in back control.

Result: Jaragui by unanimous decision.

Danny Croch vs. Andres Castillo (165 lbs.)

Round 1 – Croch throws a nice left cross that touches Castillo. Castillo responds with an overhand right that just misses. Croch hits Castillo with a solid right, rocking Castillo. Castillo seems to recover, but then he shoots and Croch stuffs it. Croch pushes in on Castillo and
Castillo backs up to the fence. Castillo covers up and Croch slips a right around his guard and lands a hard strike below Castillo’s left ear.  This buckles Castillo but then he comes up again. Castillo looks seriously rocked.  Croch throws another right and Castillo goes down, but catches himself against the fence.  Croch is holding Castillo  in a squat against the fence and he throws an underhand right on Castillo’s lowered head.  The ref is already moving and he stops the fight for a TKO victory.

Result:  Croch by TKO in the 1st round.

Mike John vs. Matt Hampton (165 lbs.)

Round 1 – John feints with a right and shoots. Hampton stuffs the shoot, clinches with an over/under and muscles John down.  Hampton ends up in John’s butterfly guard and he executes a nice butterfly sweep.  John ends up in half guard with Hampton’s back against the fence.  Hampton is up now, they clinch and Hampton takes John down again, ending up in his full guard. John has an active guard, looking for an arm-bar.  He gets it, flips Hampton over, has the arm locked in tight, extends and Hampton is forced to tap.

Result:  John by arm-bar submission at 1:09 in the 1st round.

Frankie Plasencia vs.  Damon Taylor (165 lb.)

Unfortunately, my notes on this fight are missing.

Result:  Plasencia by arm-bar submission at 0:50 in the 1st round.

K.C. Ragmadden vs. Zach Van Zant (160 lbs.)

Round 1 – The first part of the round consisted mostly of Van Zant making a few attempts to shoot, which Ragmadden stuffed, Van Zant tried to rescue with a single leg and Ragmadden counted with a standing Guillotine hold, causing Van Zant to back out.  Halfway through the round, Van Zant succeeded in taking him down with a single leg.  Van Zant held him down briefly until Ragmadden scooted to the cage and wall walked. They clinched briefly, separated, then Ragmadden slipped Van Zants left jab and countered with a right uppercut, knocking Van Zant down and out.

Result:  Ragmadden by KO in the 1st round.

Randall Wallace vs. Anthony Lopez (185 lbs.)

Unfortunately, my notes on this fight are missing.

Result:  Wallace by TKO at 1:37 in the 1st round.

Rudolph Buendia vs.  Julio Garcia (250 lbs.)

Round 1 – Garcia makes a high kick, impressive for a 250 pounder, checked. Buendia responds with a quick inside kick to the left knee. More kicks exchanged then Buendia shoots for a double leg and powers Garcia to the mat into his half guard.  Buendia steps over Garcia’s leg into full mount. Garcia rolls over, and Buendia follows into back mount. Buendia flattens him out and starts pounding right fists into Garcia’s head.  The ref jumps in and stops the fight for a TKO.

Result: Buendia by TKO at 1:35 in the 1st round.

Mike Therman vs.  Jesse Harmon (205 lbs.)

Round 1 – The fight ends in just a few seconds.  Therman lands a hard fist to Harmon, knocking him to the ground.  With Harmon on all fours, Therman drops a hammer fist directly to the back of Harmon’s head.  The ref jumps in to stop the fight.

Result:  The referee stopped the fight due to an illegal blow by Therman.  The doctor determined Harmon could not continue the fight, and the referee ruled the illegal strike was intentional.  As a result,  Harmon won by disqualification of Therman.

Granston Clarke vs. James Hardman (250 lbs.)

Round 1 – 8_50 Clarke starts off with a right kick that lands on Hardman’s side. Hardman answers right back with a front kick to that lands on Clarke’s chest. Clark lands an inside thigh kick. Hardman throws a right, Clarke sidesteps and counters with a left., follows up with a right hook, which drops Hardman. Clark jumps into mount position and throws several hard lefts before the referee stops the fight.

Result:  Clarke by TKO at 1:02 of the 1st round.

PRO CARD:

Carlos “Mongoose” Guerrero vs. Kino Vuittonet  (135 lbs. – 3 rounds x 3 min)

Guerrero is a wrestler out of Tulare,  California, associates with Team Hit Boy,  with a 0 – 3 record, 1 loss by (T)KO and 2 by submission.  Vuittonet is a wrestler out of Sacramento, California, with a 0 – 2 record; 1 loss by (T)KO and 1 by submission.

Unfortunately, my notes on this fight are missing.

Result:  Geurrero by RNC at 0:32 of the 1st round.

Anthony Vargas vs. Richard Blake (Heavyweight - 3 rounds x 3 min)

Blake has a 7 – 20 record.  Five wins were by (T)KO, 1 by submission and 1 by decision.  Eleven losses by TKO and 9 by submission.  Vargas is a late replacement, so I have no info on him at this point.

Round 1 – Vargas starts the round with an inside thigh kick to Blake.  Blake shoots, gets underhooks and they clinch.  Vargas grabs Blake’s neck and tries a hip toss, but Blake reverses, takes Vargas down and ends up in full mount.  They remain in this position for the remainder of the round, with Vargas fighting for wrist control and Blake managing to drop a few fists, without any serious damage.

Round 2 – The rounds starts out again with Vargas landing an inside thigh kick, but he follows up with an overhand right, which Blake deflects with his guard. Vargas uses this as an opportunity to shoot, but Blake stuffs the takedown attempt.  They separate and they both start swinging. Vargas throws a right kick at Blake’s side but Blake deflects it. Blake answers with a left inside thigh kick which lands on Vargas’ cup.  Time called briefly. There’s and exchange of fists and it looks like Vargas intended to shoot, but Blake lands a left below Vargas’ ear, but he doesn’t go down.  Vargas backs out and throws a right kick to the mid-section which Blake partially blocks.  Blake lands a low body shot that knocks Vargas back against the fence.  They grapple standing for a while and Vargas slips a right cross over to graze Blake’s cheek. Blake separates and they circle.  Vargas lands another right kick to the mid-section. And the round ends shortly after.

Round 3 – The rounds starts out with some circling.  Blake shoots and Vargas grabs for a guillotine hold. They separate and Blake takes Vargas to the mat.  Vargas is on all fours and Blake is in the superior position, landing several left fists on the side of Vargas’ head. Blake transitions to back mount position but is a little too high to get his hooks in.  Instead of trying to shake him off, Vargas roll onto his back.  Blake stays with him, moves to full mount and starts dropping elbows to his forehead. Vargas rolls back to his stomach and Blake takes back mount with Vargas already flattened out.  Blake lands a few fists before the round ends.

Result:  Blake by unanimous decision.

Eloy Garza vs. Chris Solis (130 lbs. - 3 rounds x 3 min)

This is the pro debut fight for both Garza and Estrada.  Garza is from Modesto, California, associates with Oakdale MMA.  Chris Solis is a late replacement, so I have no info on him at this point.

Round 1 – Solis goes straight for a left kick to the mid-section, which Garza counters with a diving a straight right which glances off the chin.  They reset and Garza throws another straight right, this time to Solis left temple, knocking Solis to the ground. Garza’s follow-through carries him forward and Solis grabs a leg, taking Garza down. Solis scrambles and pins Garza against the cage, but Garza is able to grab an arm, transition to an arm-bar with Solis still standing.  Garza has the arm trapped and the head isolated.  Solis taps quickly.

Result:  Garza by arm-bar submission at 0:48 of the 1st round.

Nick Christy vs. Oscar “Superman” Martinez (170 lbs. – 3 rounds x 5 min)

Martinez associates with Cen Cal Extreme Fitness, with a previous fight weight of 185 and a 3 – 2 record.  Two wins were by submission and 1 by decision.  The two losses were both by (T)KO.  Christy is from Rio Linda, California, associates with Huckaba’s Next Generation MMA and a 3 – 4 record.  All 3 wins were by (T)KO and his losses include 1 by (T)KO, 2 by submissions and 1 decision.

Round 1 – First contact is when Christy lands a right cross.  Some fists exchange without any effect.  Christy throws a high left kick which is deflected.  Martinez throws a left to the mid-section, which misses.  Martinez over-rotates and Christy shoots on him, pushing him against the fence.  Martinez stops the takedown and clinches with an over/under, which he transitions to a guillotine.  It looks like Martinez may get the guillotine, but Christy breaks his hold. They clinch again with Martinez still against the fence.  Christy pushes off and throws a right, which is deflected by Martinez’ guard.  Christy throws a right kick that lands high on Martinez’ thigh. Martinez takes Christy down and takes side-control, where he transitions to an an Americana.  It looks like Martinez has the has the Americana locked in.  Christy is in serious pain.  Christy kicks his body over Martinez’ back and traps his far arm.  From there he makes a great transition into a back-mounted crucifix. Then he transitions into back mount and attempts an RNC.  He lets the RNC go but has a figure four lock on Martinez’ body.  Martinez’ covers up while Christy rains down punches.  Looks like nothings getting through but the ref stops the fight for a TKO.

Result: Christy by TKO at 4:58 of the 1st round.

Ramoni Koeut vs. Ruben Trujillo (135 lbs. – 3 rounds x 3 min.)

Koeut has a 2 – 2 record, 1 win by (T)KO, 1 win by decision, and 2 losses by submission.  Ruben Trujillo is a replacement for Paul Ruiz (who pulled out of the fight due to injury), so little is known about Trujillo.  He has a 0 – 1 record, the 1 loss by decision.

Round 1 – They exchange leg kicks, then Koeut throws a straight right that touches Trujillo’s face, and shoots for a double leg and slams Trujillo to the mat, landing in Trujillo’s guard.  Koeut quickly moves to full mount, pushes him against the fence.  Trujillo blocks a couple fists then sweeps Koeut, ending up in half guard.  Koeut keeps Trujillo locked down for a while, then sweeps Trujillo and lands in side control. Koeut steps over to mount Trujillo but Trujillo takes a guillotine grip.  It looks like the guillotine is locked in, and he flips Koeut over.  But Koeut is able to stand and pushes Trujillo against the cage. Trujillo lets the guillotine go as Koeut drops for a single leg. They drop to the mat and Koeut isn’t able to control the leg, allowing Trujillo to take his back.  The round ends in this position.

Round 2 – The round starts with an exchange of fists before Koeut shoots for a double leg against the fence.  Koeut is able to pick him up, loses one leg, but is still able to drag him down. Trujillo stands but Koeut locks in on a double leg, pushing him against the fence again.  This time he picks Trujillo up, gets good elevation and slams him hard onto the mat. Trujillo scrambles and takes Koeut down.  Koeut grabs an arm and sets up an arm-bar. Trujillo lifts Koeut up by the trapped arm, and Koeut grabs his leg, and uses the arm-bar to set up a sweep.  They scramble and Trujillo ends up on top.  Trujillo throws a hammer fist to his head, then switches to a guillotine, and falls back attempting to pull Koeut into his guard.  Koeut steps over his leg, and breaks the hold.  Koeut takes Trujillo’s back, pushes his side against the cage and lands a bunch of looping fists with his outside arm.

Round 3 – They exchange some leg kicks, then Koeut lands a clean hard kick to Trujillo’s ribs, knocking Trujillo back against the cage. They grapple at the fence and Koeut ends up taking Trujillo down, but Trujillo gets a guillotine hold on Koeut.  Trujillo holds onto the guillotine and ends up on top, still hanging onto the hold.  Eventually Koeut breaks the hold, but that leaves Trujillo on top in full mount.  Koeut sweeps and ends up in Trujillo’s guard, then quickly passes to full mount. Koeut swings on Trujillo’s head, and Trujillo rolls over to give up his back.  Koeut flattens Trujillo on the mat and sinks in an RNC.  The ref on his hands and knees looking closely, but Koeut lets the hold go.  Now the ref stands them up. Trujillo lands a front kick to Koeut’s cheek – looks good but is without serious effect.  Koeut lands a straight right that rocks Trujillo back a bit. Trujillo takes Koeut down and takes his back. Now Trujillo takes the RNC hold.  Koeut tries to brush him off on the fence but Trujillo holds on with both hooks in.  After a bit Koeut taps.

Result:  Trujillo by RNC at 2:19 of the 3rd round.

Here is some analysis and stats on the fights:

The most interesting match-up is Oscar Martinez vs. Nick Christy.  Let’s be honest, most of the fighters at this event don’t have much pro experience, and those with a lot of experience have less than stellar records.  True, we may find some new up-and-comers with talent and a lot of drive.  But at this point, Martinez and Christy are the only veterans with okay records.  We happened to see Oscar Martinez fight at Rogue Fights: Vision Quest where he beat Dominic Rivera via RNC at 2:34 in the 1st round (official records say it was TKO).  He looked great, as you can see in our photos of his: take down and submission skills.  After a slow career start with two losses in 2006 and 2008, Martinez got more fights in 2010 and 2011, winning all three fights (overall record of 3 -2), including two fights at the well established Northern California Gladiator Challenge promotions.  His wins were via RNC, arm bar and unanimous decision, and both losses were by TKO.  Martinez has been out of the first round only once, a win by decision.  We haven’t see Nick Christy fight, but he has had 8 fights (4 – 4), including a two fights  in Gladiator Challenge events and one fight with the mid-level national fight promoter, King of the Cage.  His wins include 3 by KO/TKO (either 2 or 1 by KO, depending on the source), while his losses include 2 by submission (RNC), 1 by TKO (punches) and 1 by split decision.  He lost his last 2 fights.  Christy’s fights have gone to 3 rounds only twice, a win and a loss by decision.  So from their records, it looks like Christy is the better stand-up fighter and Martinez is better on the ground.  They may surprise us, but I expect the fight won’t go the distance, either ending by submission/ground-and-pound by Martinez or KO/TKO by Christy.

One other fight is interesting to  me, if for no other reason than we saw Eloy Garza’s amateur fight at Rebel Fighter: Annihilation in August 2011, where he won the Rebel Fighter amateur 135 pound title by an arm-bar submission.  This will be the first pro fight for Garza, as well as for his opponent, Raul Estrada. I wasn’t able to get their amateur records.  If anyone knows it, please let me know via comment on this page.

We were at the Saddlerack in Fremont, CA on 1-22-12 to cover the Camo fights at Born to Fight.  Here are the results with round-by-round summaries of the action.

Main Event:

Anthony Dariano (2-0-0) vs. Ethan Ama (2-0-0) - Featherweight

Anthony is 27, from San Jose and represents American Kickboxing Academy.  Ethan is 20, from San Francisco and represents Dragon House.

Round 1 – Dariano immediately shoots and grabs a body lock, pushes Ama against the cage.  They clinch against the cage struggling for control.  Dariano tries for an outside trip but Ama takes an over/under and stands him up.  The ref  separates them.  Fists are exchanged for the first time.  Dariano shoots for a double leg, takes him down, but Ama grabs a triangle, transitions to an omaplata.   The bell rings before he can complete the submission.

Round 2 – Ama throws some combinations and Dariano shoots again, takes a body lock and drops him.  Ama stands up and Dariano grabs a guillotine.  Ama escapes and Dariano takes Ama down again with a body lock.  Ama reaches for a rubber guard but just to control him.  Ama loses the rubber guard, Dariano passes guard, gets full mount and starts raining down fists.  Ama gives up his back, Dariano takes a RNC.  He has it sunk under the chin.  Ama taps quickly.

Result:  Dariano by RNC in the 2nd round.

Carlos Chavez (2-1-1) vs. Joshua Berkovic (1-1-0)  - Lightweight

Joshua is 23, from San Francisco and represents Fairtex.  Carlos is 27, from San Jose and represents Schutz MMA.

Round 1- Berkovic shoots for a double leg and powers Chavez down against the cage into his full guard.  Chavez has a lock-down so Berkovic  isn’t landing any fists.  Chavez has an active guard, grabs an armbar but Berkovic shakes him off.  Berkovic uses it as an opportunity to stand up.  They clinch, Berkovic grabs a double leg, lifts and takes Chavez to the ground.  The round ends with Berkovic in control

Round 2 – Berkovic slips a straight right through Chavez’ arms to his head.  Then Berkovic drops for a double leg, drags him down but Berkovic  immediately stands.  Berkovic takes a single leg and drags him to the ground again.  Chavez escapes and they’re on their feet again.  Berkovic has a whizzer and lands a knee to the abdomen.  Berkovic throws another knee.  He has underhooks and takes Chavez down.  Chavez reaches for an armbar but the bell sounds.

Round 3 – Berkovic ducks and threads a right through Chavez’ arms.  They clinch and Berkovic takes double underhooks, tries to take Chavez down but Chavez gets the over/under and forces Berkovic up.  They continue to clinch against the fence.  Berkovic has Chavez’ back.  Chavez rolls for a leg lock. He has it locked solid and it looksed like it would be a submission if the round hadn’t end here. It goes to the judges.

Result:  Unanimous decision for Berkovic.

Zacahary “Big Poppa” Parish (1-0-0-) vs. James “Jimmy” Shea (0-0-0) - Welterweight

Zachary is 27, from San Jose and represents American Kickboxing Academy.  James is 23, from Los Gatos and represents Ernie Reyes West Coast World Martial Arts.

Round 1 – They’re swinging immediately and Parish shoots for a double leg, but Shea gets underhooks and forces him up.  They separate.  Parish throws a right, Shea counters with a left kick which Parish grabs and takes him to the gournd.  Shea immediately goes for a triangle but can’t lock it.  Shea scrambles up and they’re both swinging again.  Looks like Parish took a good shot to the right cheek and Shea to the left cheek .  I see swelling on  both their faces.

Round 2 – Shea lands a right leg kick and Parish shoots for a double leg, but Shea forces him up.  Shea takes red down and takes his back.  Shea has both hooks in and tries for a RNC.  Parish tries to turn over and blue reaches for a twister, then transitions to a banana split.  Parish gives up his back. The round ends with Shea in control.

Round 3 – Parish lands a hard left, Shea is hurt and Parish swarms on him, but Shea lands a hard right.  Parish stumbles backward – he may be hurt.  But Parish stands and shoots for a double leg, takes Shea down and into his full guard.  Shea uses the fence to stand up. But Parish drops to a double leg, lifts and throws him to the mat.  Shea grabs a kimura and gets Parish’s hand out from between his legs, but loses control of his wrist.  The round ends with Parish in control.  It goes to the judges.

Result:  Unanimous decision for Shea.

Jason Rice (3-0-0) vs. Josepth”Mad Dog”  Silva (2-2-0) - Lightweight

Jason is 25, from San Jose and represents American Kickboxing Academy.  Josepth is 32, from Livermore and represents Combat Sports Academy.

Round 1 – Rice immediately shoots for a double leg but misses, Silva grabs a whizzer and pushes him against the fence.  Silva grabs a double leg, lifts him and drops him to the matt.  Silva has Rice against the fence, postures up, and Rice tries to escape but Silva takes his back.  Silva stands up  and lands several kicks to Rice’s legs while he’s on the round.  Silva drops a fist to Rice’s head and ends up in his guard.

Round 2 – They circle.  Silva grabs a double leg and red defends with a whizzer.  But Rice gets an inside trip and takes Silva to the ground, into his full guard. Rice has underhooks but isn’t doing anything.  Silva is landing more fists from the bottom than Rice from the top.  Rice stands then drops again, trying to land a fist, and ends up in Silva’s guard again. The round ends with Rice still not captializing on his position.

Round 3 – They’re both swinging but neither landing any solid hits.  Silva grabs a single leg and takes Rice down into side control.  Rice gains half guard.  Now it’s Silva who has the superior position and isn’t landing many fists.   Now Silva has Rice against the fence and lands a couple short fists.  Silva drops an elbow but I can’t see how much damage it did.  Silva lands a couple good fists as the last round ends.  It goes to the judges.

Result:  Unanimous decision for Silva.

Jonathan “Van Damage” Enriquez (0-1-0) vs. Brady Huang (1-1-0) - Bantamweight

Jonathan is 21, from Santa Cruz and represents Sandro Batata BJJ/Noble-Moreno boxiing.  Brady is 19, from San Francisco and represents Dragon House.

Round 1 – Enriquez grabs a single leg and Huang lands some hammer fists, but Enriquez takes him down into side control.  Huang gains full guard.  Huang maintains a high active guard.  Huang has Enriquez locked down with underhooks.  Enriquez tries to transition to side mount, but Huang uses a butterfly to hold him inside his guard.  Enriquez pushes and gets into half guard, but Huang quickly regains guard.  Huang postures up and swings but Huang pulls him back into his guard, where the round ends.

Round 2 – Huang throws a low right kick but Enriquez counters with a stiff right to the head.  Enriquez grabs a double leg and pulls Huang down the ground.  Huang uses an underhook to escape and takes Enriquez down with a double leg and into Huangs  guard.  Enriquez is keeping a loose guard. Now Enriquez tries to get a Kimura. He gets the arm out but Huang shrugs off the Kimura.  Then the round ends.

Round 3 – Huang shoots for a double leg and pushes Enriquez to the fence.  He tries to drag him down but Enriquez stands up and separates.  They stay in the pocket trading punches.  Enriquez grabs a single leg, scrambles and gets the take down.  Huang nearly escapes but Enriquez keeps control and moves and  into his close guard.  They trade punches with Enriquez in Huang’s closed guard.  no damage.  The bell rings and it goes to a decision.

Result:  Unanimous decision for Enriquez.

Robert Abbott (0-0-0) vs. JJ Okanovich (0-0-0) - Welterweight

Robert is 27, from Pacifica and represents Charles Gracie Jiu Jitsu.  JJ is 21, from San Jose and represents Team Cissero.

Round 1 – Okanovich throws a couple leg kicks.  Abbott tries to counter with a kick but Okanovich grabs it and takes Abbott to the ground.  Abbott scrambles up and they separate.  They circle briefly and Abbott grabs a single leg, taking Okanovich down into his half guard.  Okanovich grabs a guillotine and uses it to stand up.  They’re in the clinch. Abbott trips Okanovich and takes him to the ground into side mount.  Okanovich grabs an arm and tries for an armbar but Abbott pulls out and transitions to full mount.  Abbott lands some ground and pound, then the bell rings.

Round 2 -Okanovich tries for s superman punch but misses.  Abbott throws some knees and Okanovich counters with his left.  Okanovich lands a left hook.  Abbott tries a kick to the abdomen but Okanovich grabs it and pushes him against the fence.  Okanovich is still hanging onto the single leg.  Now he drops for a double leg.  Abbott sprawls against the fence but Okanovich lifts him and takes him down into full guard.  Abbott quickly locks in a triangle choke but the arm isn’t in.  So Okanovich survives and the round ends without the submission.

Round 3 – They circle and swing but no solid hits.  Abbott ranges with his left jab trying to hold Okanovich off.  Abbott throws a left leg to the abdomen , deflected.  Abbott tries to throw  a knee but Okanovich grabs it.  Abbott continues to throw, landing some while Okanovich scrambles.  Abbott grabs a double leg and takes Okanovich down into full mount.  He has Okanovich’s head trapped against the fence with one arm and is landing punches with the other.  Okanovich turns and gives him his back, then the bell rings before Abbott gets his hooks in.  It goes to the judges.

Result: Unanimous decision for Abbott.

Adam is 27, from Grover Beach and represents The Pit.  Malcolm is 20, from Hayward and represents KO1 Fitness Academy.

Round 1 – They touch gloves and go right to it.  Graham throws a kick to the abdomen but Espinoza catches it and takes him to the ground. Graham grabs hold of a guillotine, uses it to sweep into full mount and pounds Espinoza hard.  The ref stops the fight.

Result:  Graham by TKO

Kennedy Uy (0-0-0) vs. Jeff Lin ((0-0-0)  - Featherweight

Jeff is 29, from Foster City and represents  Fearless Fitness.  Kennedy is 27, from Sunnyvale and represents NorCal Fight Factory.

Round 1 – Lin lands a leg kick but Uy counters with a left hook.  More punches exchanged.  Uy grabs double underhooks and tries to drag Lin to the ground but Lin separates.  They’re circling,  nobody throwing punches.  Uy feints with a fist and shoots for double underhooks.  Uy has Lin against the cage and they both start swinging.  Uy goes for a straight right but Lin counters with a left cross.

Round 2 – Uy  lands  a couple left jabs. They cirle and throw many fists but neither are landing any solid punches.  Uy lands a good left kick.  Lin tries to throw a right but Uy counters with a solid right to the chin of Lin.  Lin looks like he’s knocked out but still standing.  His eyes are rolling back in his head.  The ref stops the fight for a standing TKO.

Result:  Uy by TKO in the 2nd round.

Peter Thompson (0-0-0) vs. Evic Liftee (0-0-0) - Lightweight

Peter is 25, from Soquel and represents American Kickboxing Academy.  Evic is 21, from Daly City and represents World Team USA.

Round 1 – They touch gloves and circle the cage.  Liftee lands a leg kick.  Thompson grabs a double leg and takes Liftee down into half  guard.  Thompson snakes in a guillotine and Liftee tries to stand up.  Thompson sits back into the guard to sink the guillotine in, but Liftee rolls over the top.  They scramble for control and Thompson ends up in Liftee’s half guard.

Round 2 – Liftee throws a right front kick and Thompson rushes Liftee,  grabbing double underhooks.  They scramble across the cage and Thompson finally gets a take down into full mount against the opposite side of the cage.  Thompson is landing some heavy blows to Liftee’s head but Liftee answers with some punches.  Liftee sits up and powers over Thompson.  They scramble and Liftee grabs a guillotine.  Thompson frees his head then the bell rings.

Round 3 -They’re both swinging in the pocket.  Thompson grabs underhooks and pushes Liftee against the fence.  Thompson takes Liftee down but Liftee grabs a guillotine.  Now Thompson’s head is out and he’s in side control.  Thompson transitions to full mount, pushing Liftee’s head against the fence.  Liftee sits up against the fence as Thompson lands some hard blows. Liftee get his feet under him and powers over again into Thompson’s guard.  Liftee is postures up, then  ands  some heavy blows.  The bell rings and it goes to a decision.

Result: Unanimous decision for Thompson.

Nathan “The Aztec Boxer” Arena (0-0-0) vs. Adam Galiste (0-0-0) - Flyweight

Nathan is 41, from San Jose and represents Gilbert Castillo/Red Triangle.  Adam is  22, from Fairfield and represents Animal MMA.

Round 1 – They clinch, struggle and Galiste grabs Arena’s back.  Arena is able to turn his back away from Galiste, still in the clinch.  Galiste has double underhooks holding Arena against the fence, where he lands some hard rights to the abdomen.  Galiste separates, but Arena swings and Galiste pushes Arena against the fence for more knees to the abdomen and legs, and short rights to the head.

Round 2 – Galiste feints with a right and shoots for a double leg, pushing him against the fence.  Galiste drags Arena down.  Galiste grabs an arm and turns it into an armbar.  Arena taps.

Result:  Galiste by armbar at 40 sec of round 2.

Ricardo Ramos (0-0-0) vs. Kenneth Carthan (0-0-0) - Lightweight

Ricardo is 34, from San Jose and represents West Valley College.  Kenneth is 27, from Hayward and represents KO1 Fitness Academy.

Round 1 – Carthan lands some low kicks.  Ramos answers but Carthan is landing the hard kicks.  Ramos grabs a foot and they clinch against the fence.  Ramos has double underhooks but can’t take Carthan down.  Not much is happening in the clinch.  A few knees to thighs and shoulders to chin.  Ramos is still struggling to take Carthan down.  Ramos finally takes Carthan down and into side control. Ramos has Carthan in the crucifix position but the bell rings.

Round 2.  Starts with Carthan kicking Ramos in the groin.  Timeout taken.  Carthan high kicks Ramos but Ramos grabs the leg again and takes Carthan down into half guard.  Ramos lands some short lefts and now moves into side control.  Carthan has a guillotine but won’t be able to submit him from side control.  The bell rings with Ramos in side control.

Round 3 – Carthan lands a good kick to Ramos’s head which stuns him, but Ramos grabs a double leg and drags Carthan to the ground.  They stand and Carthan takes Ramos down with an inside trip.  Carthan is in Ramos’ full guard. Ramos has Carthan locked down and not much is happening.  Carthan pushes Ramos against the fence and the bell rings.  The fight goes to a decision.

Result: 28.5 – Carthan, 29 – 28.5 Ramos, 29 – 28.5 Carthan for a split decision in favor of Carthan.
